Revalidation is not the same as caching

  The round trip still happens; 304 saves bandwidth, not latency or a request

  ETags only work for static files, so an API cannot use them

  The server must still generate the response to compute the ETag, so nothing is saved

  A 304 is an error response and should be avoided
